The way your store is laid out does more selling than most retailers realise. Customers don’t browse randomly. They follow sight lines, respond to aisle widths, and make purchase decisions in seconds based on what’s at eye level and what’s within easy reach. Getting your retail gondola shelving installed correctly – and arranged deliberately – is one of the highest-return investments you can make in your shop floor.
Here’s how to do both properly.
Step-by-Step: Setting Up Your Gondola Shelving Unit

Gondola shelving looks straightforward to assemble. It mostly is – but the steps that get skipped are the ones that cause problems six months later. Follow this sequence, and you’ll have a stable, level, compliant installation that holds up under real retail conditions.
Establish the Base and Leveling Feet
Everything starts at the floor. Lay out your base feet according to your planned unit length and secure the lower kickplates into position. Before anything goes vertical, take a spirit level to the base.
This step gets rushed more than any other, and it’s the one that matters most. An unlevel base causes the entire upright structure to lean – and a lean that looks minor at floor level becomes significant at the top of a fully loaded gondola. Over time, an unlevel installation puts stress on bracket connections, causes shelves to tilt forward, and creates a unit that looks unprofessional and performs poorly under stock weight.
Adjust the leveling feet until the base reads true in both directions. Retail floors – particularly in older tenancies – are rarely perfectly level. Take the time here.
Insert the Vertical Uprights and Back Panels
With a level base confirmed, slot the vertical uprights into the base feet. These form the structural spine of your retail gondola and need to seat fully and squarely before anything else is attached.
Once your uprights are in position, slide your chosen backing panels – slatwall or pegboard depending on your merchandising requirements – down between the upright channels. The backing panel locks the vertical frame into position, adding rigidity to the entire structure. Don’t treat the back panel as decorative. It’s structural, and it needs to be fully seated in the channels before you move to the next step.
Hook and Click the Shelving Brackets
Insert the shelf brackets into the upright slots at your desired heights. The critical detail here is alignment — left and right brackets must sit on exactly parallel tracks before the shelf goes on top. A bracket that’s one slot off-level on either side creates a tilted shelf that looks wrong, causes product to slide forward, and puts uneven load on the bracket connection.
Check alignment visually and physically before placing your steel shelves. Once the shelf is on and loaded with product, correcting a misaligned bracket means unloading everything and starting again. Get it right before the stock goes on.
Merge into the Store Layout Plan
Individual units installed correctly are only half the job. How you position your gondola shelving across the floor determines how customers move through your store – and how much they buy on the way.
Position your assembled units to create natural, intuitive aisles. The minimum aisle clearance between gondola runs should be 900mm; 1200mm is preferable for higher-traffic environments and is required in many configurations to meet accessibility compliance standards. Aisles that are too narrow feel uncomfortable, slow customer movement, and create congestion at peak trading periods. Aisles that are too wide waste floor space and reduce your total shelving capacity.
Plan your gondola layout before assembly begins. Moving fully assembled and loaded retail gondola shelving units after the fact is time-consuming, physically demanding, and usually results in scratched floors.
3 Merchandising Rules for Gondola Shelves

Installation gets your retail gondola standing. Merchandising makes it sell. These three rules are the ones that make the most consistent difference across retail environments.
The “Eye-Level is Buy-Level” Rule
The shelf between roughly 1200mm and 1600mm is your most valuable real estate across your entire gondola shelving run. This is the zone customers see first, engage with most, and reach for without thinking. High-margin products, new lines, and priority stock belong here – not your most popular basics, which customers will find regardless of where you put them.
Use the lower shelves on your gondola for bulk product, value lines, and heavier items that benefit from a lower pick height. Use the upper shelves for secondary range or overflow stock. Treat eye level as premium shelf space and assign it with the same deliberateness you’d apply to a window display.
Utilising End Caps for High-Margin Promos
The end cap – the facing shelf at the terminus of each gondola run – gets more customer eyeball time than almost any other position in the store. Customers see it as they travel down the main aisle, as they turn the corner, and as they navigate back. It’s a natural pause point.
Don’t waste gondola shelving end caps on regular ranging. Use them for promotional product, seasonal lines, high-margin items, or anything you’re actively trying to move. Rotate them regularly – a static end cap stops registering with repeat customers within a few visits.
Vertical Product Grouping Blocks
Rather than ranging product horizontally across an entire shelf, group related products in vertical blocks – the same category or brand running from the top shelf to the bottom shelf in a defined column. Customers shop vertically more naturally than they shop horizontally, and vertical blocking makes a category easier to find, easier to navigate, and more visually cohesive.
It also makes restocking faster. A clearly defined vertical block means your team knows exactly where every SKU lives without checking a planogram each time.
